Calaveras County AAUW encourages higher education through scholarships to high school seniors and to reentry women. The funding for these scholarships is from the interest and dividends of the Calaveras Scholarship Trust, a tax exempt trust established in the 1980s. Money raised by the branch and gifts to CST establish the principal. The return on this investment allows us to give up to six $1,000.00 scholarships each year. This fund also allows us to send four seventh grade girls to Tech Trek Camp each summer. Tech Trek is a week long math science camp at a university sponsored by AAUW-CA.
The branch also contributes to the AAUW Funds. These are national and international fellowships offered to graduates from the United States and from other nations to pay for the last year in completing doctorial programs.
Many interest sections are available to our members such as walking, bridge, and book groups. This gives an opportunity to meet in smaller groups in each others homes.
For many years, our branch has sponsored the “Great Decisions” discussion series sponsored by the Foreign Policy Association. This is held in February and March focusing on international affairs; bringing in local professors and community members to lead the discussions.
Calaveras County AAUW is open to anyone in the county who has an AA, BA or above from a college or university and who is interested in furthering AAUW’s mission to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research.
